De-Bunking My Own Myths
I thought I'd jot down a few thoughts before I start packing .
This is my 4th year at serious running. I really never ran in school, mostly Basketball and Swim team. I did run 5 miles once ,back in 1985 with my uncle who at the time was into the whole Jim Fixx thing. Did the whole damn thing on zero training and boy did that hurt ! It really turned me off from the whole idea.
Fast forward to 2004. On somewhat dubious and inadequate running base, I did Philly with my longest run in training being 16.5 miles. Back then I was suffering with ITBS and assorted injuries that typically plague a runner that is attempting too much too soon.
Nevertheless...I finished with the back of the pack. Lets just say I went sub6.
Since then I've gone thru several ups and downs. All of 05 I spent trimming down to 168lbs 7% body fat. I was light all right ! But, no stamina.
But I pushed on,as I really started to enjoy the process, but more importantly I decided to become a student of the sport. Everything from proper form, shoes, nutrition, base building, etc, etc.
When it comes down to it, I think I became OCD about improving. I had some friends that were no where near my fitness level,or had my body comp, but could still run a 3:45 mary on 35-40 MPW ! This motivated me more than anything. ,but not so much to beat them, but to at least join the club.
I have found a new level of respect or running. Its a very humbling sport.
I write this because I completed the best workout of my life yesterday. I hit and surpassed my time goal for the 10x 1/2 mile intervals . Based on my total prep, my friend had put me on a goal time of 4:15-25 per 1/2 mi. The course was rolling and man was it cold. We started a 9:30 and it was about 10F. After a 4 mile warm up we went at it.
I averaged 4:10's and intervals 5,6, and 8 were 3:40's ! In total we ran 16.2 and zero pains and finished the last mile cruising like butter !
I won't declare a goal time at this point. I'm just going to get it done and post a RR ! I feel this is the one !
Stay Warm, and stay True !
