Hyannis Marathon RR
Nothing much to report other than I DNF'd my first race ever.
All was going as planned until I rolled my left ankle on a pothole at about mile 7. Its just one of those dumb luck things that can't be avoided.
If memory serves me right I was looking at the opposite side of the road as the leaders of the 10K race were flying by, and I must have just hit that hole enough to have dropped my foot.
It wasn't too bad at first as I popped 3 Tylenols ( I always bring them in my kit for miles 22-25 ) and it got me to mile 10 w/o slowing down at all.
By the rollers at mile 11 it was evident that some throbbing was developing and it would be retarded to ruin my entire season by trying to finish.
I made it back to the S/F line as this was a 2 loop race and I crossed the timing mat and took off my chip telling the official that I pulled out.
I still crossed at 2:09 so considering this course was no where near a PR course I was happy with the effort as I didn't feel like I even did anything.
Crap....all that carbo-loading for nothing.
As far as the race itself. We had a blast ! Gorgeous scenery along the waterfront, and affluent neighborhoods everywhere., Race officials were good and the crowd was not too small for a winter race.
The course itself was challenging. Harder than Philly., and not a PR course at all. Too many rollers and hills. For me, it was hard to get in a rhythm .
My friend who normally runs 3-3:04's at NYC and Boston ran his slowest ever at 3:16 !
Conditions were not too shabby,. 30-32F at race start and by mile 4 I took my gloves off.
Now that a week has passed- my ankle is just about back to normal. My 5 mile dreadmill run yesterday went OK....so all is good.
I'm considering the Cape May Jersey marathon on the 25th of this month. This is for sure a PR course as I know of some people that go there to BQ.
The only downside is that its a small race and almost no crowds after the 10 mile racers are done.
No biggie. I don't mind a quiet race. It just means more mental fortitude.
I'll wait and see how I feel after Tuesdays 18 miler.
Can't win em all. It could have been worse as far as injury , so I thank God that he hooked me up.
Peace to all....and remember....Tipping is not a small village in China. Your waiter or waitress can be the next American Idol winner and Oscar nominee.
