Diesel engine or 6 cylinder 24 valve Turbo ?
I was thinking about these and 2 types of motors while on my long ride yesterday. Ironman training is all about the diesel.
You start out nice and easy , work yourself up to a comfortable steady pace and hold on to hopefully a decent finish. The cost of speeding up on the swim , bike or any portion of the run will result in serious walk time.
I read and somewhat agree that depending on one's fitness base/athletic age , one starts an Ironman with a certain number of energy watts in their fitness bank. Knowing how much you have is KEY ! Withdraw too much and .........boom ! There goes the nuclear mushroom cloud.
Not working with power yet, so most of my training is from percieved effort ( PE ).
As the years pass, I'm getting better at judging my paces and zones , I mean I'd love to have an Ergometer, but its not in the budget for now. A few years ago I worked w/ a HR monitor, but I became a slave to it, besides I'm not breaking any records and as it turns out training w/PE isn't all too complicated.
As of today I have definitely hit a peak in overall fitness and health in my 40+ years. Yesterday I got thru a 105 mile ride with a feeling of confidence that I did not have last year. I can actually insert many periods of steady and I enjoy hillwork and no longer fear steep hills of any duration.
My transition run off that ride was also a real boost is moral. My legs don't feel like oak anymore once off the bike. It takes about 4-5 mins of running to get super comfy, but it does get good.
Like most good coaches say. It takes a few years of racing and training for Ironman to get to a level of efficiency. Patience, Consistency, working on Form & economy , Nutrition and the biggie REST & RECOVERY ! Especially the latter. I have now got a grasp on how important that is.
SBR Totals:
5/21- 2500yds of Drills
5/22- 105 miles + 15 min t-run
5/23- 7 mile run+ 2 hrs of yard work
Tomorrow is another 105 mile ride then its a mild taper going into Mooseman.
